Greenroom’s Groundling Awards

It’s the start of summer today, which means that from now on, and until the start of Season 2011, there’s going to be a lot of theatre downtime here in the Sunshine State.

So we thought to keep the chat alive and to have a bit of serious fun, that Greenroom would launch our own theatre awards for Season 2010. The Groundlings will be people’s choice awards, and you get to nominate in all categories. Once nominations close – we think 1st February is a fair enough date – voting will open for a couple of weeks. We’ll announce the winners on Valentine’s Day. How does that sound?

We’re working on the categories which will relate to professional and independent/pro-am theatre in Queensland, and not just in Brisbane, OK? The old favourite categories will be there: Best Performances, productions, design etc. etc., but there will also be some that relate to the use of new media and the arts – stay tuned for details.

Oh, and the awards themselves? No cash, no trophies, just the warm glow that comes from acknowledgement of peers and theatre lovers plus a front page spread on Greenroom.

Back soon!

Greenroom now tweets out a daily digest called Greenroom Asides of the tweets posted by us and by those we follow or ‘curate’ as Twitter has it. If you are on Twitter and follow Greenroom (you do, don’t you?) you will already have seen these as they flow in during the day; they contain some of the best theatre-related links you’ll find anywhere. You can also read them all gathered together here in an online newspaper or magazine format, complete with images. You might care to subscribe to Greenroom Asides if you don’t tweet …

The Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Art invites independent Queensland artists and companies to apply for Fresh Ground, their artist-in-residency program due to kick off in early to mid 2011.  Successful applicants get $10,000 in space, expertise and equipment to develop, create and rehearse new projects across a range of genres.  Katherine Lyall-Watson recently interviewed Ruth Hodgman, the Judy’s Director about the concept of Fresh Ground. Just remember to get your application in by December 3.

La Boite’s Season 2011 is looking most engaging. We especially like their website and the spooky, smoking fridge in their season trailer.

With something of a gulp, we notice the year ticking away, with Christmas a little over a month away. News right here was of a silly hack of our site during the week. It’s now fixed, thanks to the good guys at A2 Web Hosting (see their logo over on the side there). If you are looking for a web host for your own blog, you couldn’t do better in our humble opinion.

La Boite launches its Season 2011 on Monday – possibly the last cab off the rank in terms of announcements for next year’s annual seasons. It will be fascinating to see what David Berthold has planned for the year ahead.

We wrote last week about the Wasserstein Prize furore in the US. The outcry at no play’s being deemed worthy this year for the prize resulted in the panel’s decision to review their decision. There’s no news yet but, as with most of these things, there is more to this than meets the eye.  There was a thoughtful follow-up interview by Adam Feldman for Time Out with one of the jurors, Victoria Bayley. It’s worth a read to get the other side of the picture.

In the News:

Thinking globally, acting locally This weekend and, from the international #2amt Twitter and website group of theatre-makers, came a Modest Proposal to create readings for the finalists of the Wendy Wasserstein Prize. Now, although most will have heard of US playwright Wendy Wasserstein (1950-2006), we’d venture to suggest that most Australian playwrights won’t have heard of the Wasserstein Prize, which is open to female writers from the US and UK – and that is probably why it’s not known well here. However, this year, the TDF (Theatre Development Fund) jury, in its wisdom, decided that no play was worthy of the prize. Does this sound spookily family to the response in May this year from the panel deciding the NSW Premier’s Literary Prize for Drama? No play was deemed worthy then; that kicked up a flurry too, and rightly so. Here’s Performance Anxiety from The Australian at the time if you missed it. But, back to #2amt, who’ve responded creatively to the TDF Wasserstein Prize jury’s decision, and it’s very exciting.

2amt are suggesting that the 19 finalists for the Wasserstein receive a live-streamed reading of their works, and are calling on companies anywhere to assist. Already groups from the US, UK and Australia are committed. What about you and yours? Interested? If so, check out the post (hotlinked above) and playwright Michael Lew’s terrific response to the TDF Selection Panel on their decision.

Now, there may be some here who would fly the parochial flag and kick about none of the play’s being by an Australian writer. Balance that against thinking of this ‘modest proposal’ as the chance for an international production, as well as a great opportunity to link up with colleagues and share with audiences around the world. Providing support for female playwrights is a fine gesture too. And, bye the bye, live-streaming is perfect for play-readings, in our humble opinion.

You know about ATF (Anywhere Theatre Festival) right?  Headed by Paul Osuch, ATF is the first theatre festival to get around the lack of theatre venues in Brisbane by only allowing shows that don’t use them. Whilst it’s not coming to a recognised venue near you between 5-14 May 2011, look out for theatre anywhere at that time. Seen the look of their new website?

This week ATF have been working away steadily on the social networks investigating the idea of a local producers’ forum as an exchange of ideas. One response suggested Brisbane theatre-makers don’t like sharing their ideas. Really?

Finally, if you’re a Brisbane theatre-maker and haven’t got your application in to BITS yet – do it today!
